Traditionally, a paver was a flat stone used to pave pathways, while a cobble referred to a rounded stone taken from a riverbed, originally used as ballast in ships and for paving roads. Over time, cobblestones came to mean any paver made from natural stone, quarried and shaped to be uniform in size.

Today, natural stone has become prohibitively expensive. As a result, most pavers are now manufactured from concrete. A cost-effective, durable, and aesthetically pleasing alternative.

Cobblestone Pavers

Cobblestone pavers are typically made from a wet mixture of stone, sand, cement, and colouring agents. This mixture is hand-placed into individual moulds of varying shapes and sizes to mimic the appearance of true cobblestones. Wet-cast cobblestone pavers are more affordable than natural stone, yet their high-density composition ensures incredible durability and a long lifespan.

Concrete Pavers

Concrete pavers, on the other hand, are made from a similar but very dry mix. The mixture is fed into large moulds, then compressed using a vibrating press, causing the small amount of water to set the cement. While concrete pavers offer many of the same practical benefits as cobblestones, they are generally less durable and not as visually striking.

Which Should You Choose?

Concrete Pavers: Ideal for budget-friendly driveways or walkways.

Cobblestones: Perfect for those seeking a more durable, elegant, and unique design for driveways, walkways, courtyards, or around swimming pools.

If you love the look of cobblestones but your budget is tight, consider installing a cobblestone border or decorative inlay to achieve the effect without the full cost.

Maintenance and Repairs

Both concrete and cobblestone pavers are low-maintenance. A high-pressure wash once or twice a year, along with regular weed removal between joints, keeps them looking great. Damaged areas are usually easy to repair by lifting the pavers, resurfacing the sand base, and reinstalling them.
